At some point, many of us ask ourselves big questions like:
- Why are we here?
- What’s the purpose of our lives?
- Are we just going through the motions, hoping things make sense eventually?
- Or is there something deeper at play?
These questions matter, and thankfully, the Bible offers us some clarity.
Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” This means our lives are not random. We are God’s creation, crafted with intention. We’re not accidents or meaningless people trying to create our own value. God made us with a purpose, and that purpose is about living in a way that reflects His character.
But here’s the catch: purpose doesn’t start with what we achieve; it begins with our relationship with Him.
In Acts 17:26-27, Paul writes that God created people and set their times and places “that they should seek the Lord.” That’s profound! Our main purpose isn’t to chase popularity or success; it’s to seek God. Life truly makes sense when it leads us back to the One who created us. So, if you’re wondering, “Why am I here?” one of the first answers is this: we’re here to know God, seek Him, and live closely with Him.
This is important because today’s world often pressures us to be impressive. We can start thinking that our purpose hinges on being famous, admired, or having it all figured out early. But the Bible flips that notion on its head. Before God talks about our achievements, He emphasizes our relationship with Him. Before discussing what we do, He wants us to understand who we belong to.
Psalm 139 offers insight as well. David writes, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” He’s not just saying humans are interesting; he’s declaring that God formed him with care and intention. Our lives carry meaning, even if we don’t have everything mapped out yet.
As young people, it’s easy to feel pressured to have our entire future planned. We think we should already know what we want to become and where we’re headed. But often, God reveals our purpose step by step, not all at once.
That’s why Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” If we acknowledge Him, He will guide our paths. Purpose isn’t something we force or control; it’s something we grow into as we trust God. We might not see every detail now, but as long as He’s directing our path, we’re on the right track.
- So, why are we here?
- We’re here because God made us.
- We’re here to seek Him.
- We’re here to walk with Him.
- We’re here to live out the good works He has prepared for us.
That’s a comforting thought because it means our lives aren’t empty, even when they feel unfinished. Not knowing everything doesn’t mean we lack purpose; it just means we’re still being led. Sometimes, purpose unfolds in small acts of obedience, daily growth, quiet faithfulness, and staying close to God as He shapes us.
So, when you ask, “Why am I here?” don’t let pressure cloud your mind. Start with God. Because when you begin with Him, the question transforms from feeling hopeless into an exciting journey of discovering why He placed you here in the first place.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that our lives have meaning and purpose. Help us not to feel confused or disconnected, driven only by what the world celebrates. Teach us to seek You first, trust You with our future, and walk in the purpose You have for us. Amen.
